Residential Services

Since it’s founding in 1869, the core function of Stewart's Hospital has been the provision of residential care. The development of this service has been a continuous process. In 1982, we pioneered the establishment of purpose built bungalows and houses for residents - a dramatic move away from institutionalised, ward-style accommodation. This facilitated the creation of family-style living for all residents, regardless of how profound their disability.

At Stewarts, we continuously strive to promote a high standard of care by implementing evidence based best practices to achieve excellence in service provision.

It is our policy, using a multi disciplinary approach with our service users, to help them develop life skills in order to realise their full potential. The changing pattern towards community living has enabled the organisation, through the process of continuous evaluation, to offer a range of accommodation options to our service users. In Residential services we provide a variety of living facilities ranging from high to medium support accommodation. The focus of our service is to provide a homely environment, with the individuality of each service user at its core.

Specialist Residential Services

Specialist residential services have been developed to cater for people with profound disabilities or those who require intensive medical or nursing care or who have specific additional needs. These services include:

Mental Health Services

Stewarts services operate a specialist unit for people with intellectual disabilities who also exhibit additional mental health problems and require intensive support and care. This unit operates to the standards as laid out by the Mental Health commission in accordance with the Mental Health Act 2001. This service accepts referrals from other intellectual disability agencies and provides full assessment facilities. Future plans include the development of a purpose built centre in partnership with the HSE.

Our mental health services also cater for the needs of our service users who exhibit challenging behaviour by supporting them in their homes through a multi disciplinary team approach. Picture
Adult Respite Services: These services provide additional support for service users and their families living in the community. Respite is planned with parents/guardians on a yearly basis and there is also the facility to accommodate occasional emergency situations. This important and highly specialised service is also interlinked with other disability services including health boards. Picture

Children's Respite Services

Stewart's children’s respite service provides accommodation for planned admissions and emergency care for those who are currently availing of Stewart's schooling, community services or day care. This service caters for those children who exhibit challenging behaviours or who require more specialised nursing/clinical supports. Our purpose built unit has been specifically developed to meet the needs of these service users. Our highly skilled and experienced nursing staff, in conjunction with the multi disciplinary team, also assess, plan and implement programmes with these children and their families which can be continued at home and in school. This service is also available to the wider community, including the many other organisations that provide services for children with intellectual disabilities. Picture

Care of the Elderly:

With the high standards of health care provided by Stewart's Hospital, our service users are enjoying a longer life span resulting in a growing elderly population. We provide specialised supports for these service users, many of whom are experiencing declining physical and mental health. Picture

Severe Physical/Intellectual Disabilities Services

The specialised nursing care needed for individuals with severe disabilities require a high degree of skill and dedication interlinked with best practices. Stewart's continues its tradition as a national care centre for people with severe to profound intellectual disabilities. A significant number of our service users experience additional physical disabilities. This high dependency area of care in which the service excels, offers a challenging but rewarding experience for its staff. The excellence we have achieved in care delivery ensures that our residential services are second to none. Picture
