Preschool

Is located on the main Stewarts Hospital campus and caters for 18 children with varying degrees of intellectual disability, between the ages of 2.5 and 5 years. The Preschool Programme is designed to stimulate, educate and meet the special needs of each child attending the preschool. Several children require specialist medical and feeding procedures, therefore the team in the preschool is made up of nurses, teachers and care staff.

The Senior Team Member and her staff liase closely with parents prior to a child attending preschool and during their stay. The Preschool team also work very closely with the multi-disciplinary team especially the social workers, occupational therapist physiotherapist, speech & language therapist, dietician and paediatrician. A varied programme is designed around the needs of each child to include play, music, swimming and recreation, socialisation, communication skills and personal care skills. Specialist equipment is available to assist children with poor mobility and every effort is made in their formative years to improve speech and language, mobility and advance learning in preparation for their progression, at the age of 5 years, to national school.

Children attending Stewarts Preschool can avail of special transport and are escorted by a member of the Preschool Team. This allows parents and staff to communicate on a daily basis and enables parents to avail of a quality Preschool service.
